You’ve decided on a destination wedding. You’ve gone through all the details, the date is chosen, the location, the venue .. check! Now comes the time to choose your photographer, someone who will capture your special day in a unique, artistic, and storytelling style. The standard, staged wedding photos and awkward, artificial poses aren’t your thing. When you look back on your wedding photos you want to relive the day, the joy, and all the emotions, along with all of the unforgettable, authentic moments.

Franklin, of F Balzan Photography shares the same vision. Each of his stunning images will serve as a tribute to the memory of your unique love story, and your true selves. Through his journalistic style, he will visually narrate your story through the emotions and feelings of the day, allowing you to relive the day that you had been longing for, with beautifully authentic and lasting memories.

Franklin’s approach is personal, deep and intimate, and the most important thing for him is that you fall in love with his vision and his work. He describes his photographic style as “timeless, authentic and soulful”.

Let’s get to know more from Franklin himself!
1. What first got you interested in photography?
Strangely as it can indeed look, I only bought my very first digital camera in 2007 for a trip abroad and I was hooked! I bought a more professional camera in 2012 and then started to explore photography until I shot my first wedding in 2014. I suddenly began to fall in love with the idea of creating imagery – especially documenting people and their daily lives. I began to notice all the beauty of the
2. How long have you been a professional photographer?
I have been capturing weddings for the last 9 years now, so soon hitting a decade! I do however have to say that my style has evolved with time and I now seek to ensure that I am a good fit for a couple getting married and that they resonate with my photography style.
3. How would you describe your style of wedding photography?
My style is one which can be described as an unhindered documentary search for fun, creative and artistic memories. My portraits are meant to be poetic but bold – different from what the mainstream market presents.

4. Do you work solely in Malta or do you travel to work in other countries too?
I work all over Europe – I have done weddings in Malta, Italy and Portugal and photoshoots in Germany and Japan during these last few years, with a wedding in Sicily booked for next year.
5. What kind of packages do you offer to couples?
My approach is a custom tailored one – where I like to get in touch with the couples to understand their needs better and make sure I am a good fit for them. I like to curate my offer based on the couple’s needs and necessities.
6. How many weddings have you photographed?
It is difficult to give an exact number as each year I photograph around 20 to 25 weddings, so I would say around 200 weddings now – varying from catholic, symbolic, legal, indian and nigerian weddings with different cultures and traditions. In reality as time goes by, I am trying to limit the number of weddings I do as I love to give the due attention to each couple who books me.

7. Can couples meet with you before the wedding to discuss their requirements and do you offer online meetings to those traveling for their wedding?
I meet my couples online – infact I find this essential that every couple who wants to book me, speaks with me beforehand. During our initial call we not only discuss photography style, timelines and any special wedding moments but most importantly I try to understand what the wedding couples deems as most important, the people who are closest to the couple and the personality of the couple.
8. Can couples see galleries of your previous weddings?
Absolutely – my website (www.fbalzan.com) contains full galleries of weddings I have shot in Malta and in Europe.
9. How long after the wedding can couples expect to receive their photos?
As I like to give attention to all of my couples, I normally deliver the full galleries within 3 weeks from the wedding (normally I deliver the galleries earlier but let’s say I like to over deliver!)

10. How do you choose which couples you will work with?
As previously indicated, I always do a call with my couples before booking them. I make sure they have seen my work well, understand and are in line with my philosophy and want to have creative photos. I am not willing to work with couples who want traditional or too posed photo style.
12. How would you describe your working style on the day?
I love to intervene as little as possible during the wedding day – as I want the couple to enjoy their wedding day. Then during the portrait sessions (which is maybe like 5% of their wedding day) I love to create artististic portraits which are creative and poetic.
13. What is your favourite part of the day to capture?
My favourite part is generally the party – as the couple and the guests are just completely at ease at this point of this wedding day and are just having fun. Everyone has his barriers down and is just himself on the dance floor.

14. What do you value most when working with couples?
I value the experience above all. I do not want to hinder the couple’s experience and while I prioritise in immortalising the real moments of the wedding – the laughter, the crying, the anger, the amazement – I feel that I have to ensure firstly that the couple are enjoying the experience of their wedding. This will make it possible that when the couple re-see the wedding photos, they re-live the same emotions.
